If you have been to a concert or festival recently you probably already know about the good folks at Conscious Alliance. If you don’t know them, you haven’t been paying attention.
Conscious Alliance was founded in 2002 by University of Colorado student Justin Baker as a way to aid impoverished Native American Indian Reservations in the western United States. Through the help of donations, Conscious Alliance was able to build a food storage and distribution facility on the Pine River Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The facility distributes emergency food for over 100 families in need.
In addition to helping out on the Native American reservations, Conscious Alliance has expanded their efforts to assisting with disaster relief. When hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans, the folks at Conscious Alliance joined in the relief effort raising nearly $100,000 in cash donations and distributing over 30,000 pounds of food.
What began as a campus food drive has now expanded to concerts and festivals. Often offering a free limited edition poster in exchange for donations, Conscious Alliance has made themselves permanent fixtures on the music scene, and the posters have become collector items.
To date, Conscious Alliance has collected and distributed more than 500,000 pounds of food items throughout the US, half of the 1 mil pound goal. Once they reach their goal, they hope to continue to donate 1 mil pounds of food every year.
